- I am considered one of a few. I grew up in a small coal-mining town in Pennsylvania where opportunity and income was very scarce, but grit and compassion were high. My Italian ancestors worked in the mines; I never heard a complaint from my grandparents who reared me. I learned to be grateful for my glass half full and not half empty. I worked 3 jobs in high school to get myself into the University of Florida, and I continue to work as I finish college as a first-generation student. Everyone’s path is different. Other’s may not understand it, but they don’t have to; you don’t have to answer to anyone. I learned to stop comparing my journey to others or letting others compare their journey to mine. I’m unapologetically first generation Italian-American chasing my “American Dream”. Stop asking me “when?” or “have?” because all that matters is “I will” just like many others going through this process.
